Deliciously Healthy Choc Protein Balls: The Ultimate On-The-Go Snack!

These chocolate protein energy balls are the perfect 3 pm snack when you’re slumped at your desk, considering a trip to the café for sweets. Your bank account and blood sugar levels will thank you! They’re also ideal for lunchboxes, post-workout recovery and travel. Plus, these freeze so well, I often double the recipe to make a big batch. Protein balls contain healthy fats from nuts and seeds, essential for hormone health, and the combination of protein, fibre, and healthy fats helps stabilise blood sugar, preventing energy crashes. Satisfy your sweet tooth with chocolate protein balls that'll please even the pickiest of eaters. Loaded with healthy ingredients and tons of irresistible flavour, these are a nutritious treat for the whole family—including kids!

Nutritional Goodness in Every Bite

Almonds form the nutritious base of these protein balls, providing healthy fats, vitamin E, and protein that support sustained energy levels, heart health, and glowing skin.

Chia seeds may be small, but they’re nutritional powerhouses! Packed full of protein, fibre, and omega-3 fatty acids, chia seeds support digestive health, hair, skin and nails, reduce inflammation, and protect the heart.

Sunflower seeds and Pepitas (pumpkin seeds) add essential minerals like magnesium, zinc, and iron, boosting immune function, muscle recovery, and overall vitality.

Cacao powder gives a rich chocolate flavour along with potent antioxidants, which help protect your cells against oxidative damage and support heart health. Cacao is also hormone-balancing, working to boost your serotonin levels in the body - hello happy hormones! It helps regulate cortisol levels, reducing stress and promoting overall hormone health.

Dates naturally sweeten these protein balls and add a fibre-rich energy boost that supports digestive health and stabilises blood sugar levels. Medjool dates specifically give a yummy caramel flavour and provide nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, and B vitamins.

Optional Extras for Extra Benefits

If you’re looking to ramp up the nutritional profile even further, consider adding a scoop of your favourite protein powder for muscle recovery and sustained energy. A chocolate-flavoured protein works best here, but vanilla or unflavoured works well too. I am liking the Chief Collagen Protein at the moment!

I also like adding in some Foraged for You Mother’s Blend for a little extra nutrition! It was specifically developed for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, but is suitable for anyone, regardless of age or gender. It is packed full of certified organic fermented foods and grass-fed beef liver powder, providing a healthy dose of iron, iodine, zinc, folate, Vitamin A and B12.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup almonds

  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

  • 1 tbsp sunflower seeds

  • 1 tbsp pepitas

  • 1 tbsp cacao powder

  • 1 cup dates

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil (melted)

  • Foraged For You (optional)

  • Protein powder (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Add almonds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, pepitas, cacao powder, foraged and protein powder into a food processor.  Blend until a powder forms.

  2. Add in the dates and coconut oil.  Blend again until a dough forms.  (You may need to add a little bit of water to get the sticky consistency).

  3. Roll the dough into golf sized balls.

  4. Store in an airtight container in the freezer or fridge for the week.

  5. Enjoy!

Storage:

For the freshest and firmest protein balls, keep them refrigerated or frozen:

  • In the fridge: Store in an airtight container for 1-2 weeks.

  • In the freezer: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Label with the date. Thaw at room temperature for a few minutes before eating.

Extra Tips:

  • If your dough feels crumbly, add a bit more oil or water and warm the mixture slightly by squeezing it in your palms before rolling. This helps to warm it and make the ball cohesive.

  • Experiment with different nuts and seeds (whatever you have on hand). You can use flaxseeds, sesame seeds, walnuts, cashews etc.
